Description

David E. Davis

I was born November 7, 1930, in a house without running water or electricity on the side of a hill called Tyree's Knob, not far from Burnside, Kentucky. As soon as my mother was fit to travel, we joined that great migration of southerners moving from south to north.

I'm told that, as a small child, I could identify cars passing outside the family apartment by their sound.

My favorite teething device was the hard-rubber shift knob from my father's Ford Model A coupe. When my father traded that car for another, he had to come home at lunch time to retrieve that shift knob from my playpen. I cried, and so did my mother.

When we traveled in that car, I slept on the parcel shelf. The family's Boston Bull Terrier, Bozo, slept up there with me.

I remember a 1934 Ford two-door, a 1937 Plymouth two-door with a ventilator on the trunk-for my father's English Setter, and a 1940 Olds 66 sedan that saw us through World War II.

After the war, we got a '46 Olds 76 fastback sedan, and that was followed a '47 Olds 76 fastback sedan. My father had a sporadic drinking problem by then, and both of those cars were destroyed in alcohol-related accidents.

I learned to drive in 1946, on an Army surplus Jeep. My favorite uncle, my Uncle Jim Bill Simpson, was navigator on a B-17-an officer. He was shot down on his first raid over Germany and he did a couple of years in a German P.O.W. Camp, Stalag Luft III. This entitled him to a special priority on a brand new Jeep. It cost him $700 dollars, and it came covered with cosmoline, in a crate. He and I used it to build a nasty little road half a mile up that hill.

My job was to warn all of the pregnant women on that hillside that my uncle was about to set off some dynamite.

Inasmuch as the war had just ended and the guys had just come home, there were plenty of pregnant ladies to warn.
